CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The American Insurance Association spent $320,000 in the first quarter to lobby the federal government on financial regulatory reform, disaster planning and other issues, according to a recent disclosure report.
That's slightly less than the $330,000 the insurance group spent in the year-ago period, and even with what it spent in the fourth quarter of 2009.
The American Insurance Association is a property-casualty insurance trade organization based in Washington, D.C. The group, which represents about 300 insurance companies, also lobbied on issues including homeowners insurance, flood insurance, workers' compensation laws, taxes, patent reform and the Consumer Fairness Act.
In the January-March period, the trade group lobbied Congress and the Department of Transportation, according to the report filed April 19 with the House clerk's office.
The Obama administration has proposed a series of measures to tighten the reins on financial institutions in hopes of preventing a recurrence of the crisis that struck both Wall Street and Washington in the fall of 2008.
