CHARLOTTE, NC - Dozens of firefighters rescued a plumber who was trapped for about an hour in an underground hole in southeast Charlotte Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 12:15 p.m. in a residential neighborhood in the 2700 block of Thornbush Court off McKee Road.
The victim was trapped underground after a trench collapsed. The Charlotte Fire Department described the emergency operation as a "trench rescue."
The plumber, who is employed with Ammons Plumbing of Matthews, was working on a water leak down in the trench when the walls of the hole collapsed trapping him inside.
Ammons Plumbing confirmed the worker's name is Benancio "Benny" Ramos of Indian Trail.
Firefighters placed a yellow tube into the hole to provide ventilation as they worked to reach the man.
Dozens of firefighters lifted Ramos from the hole around 1:12 p.m.
According to MEDIC spokeswoman Kristin Young, the man was taken to an ambulance and then transported to a medical helicopter. Ramos was then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main.
Charlotte Fire Department Spokesman Rob Brisley said no workers or firefighters were injured during the rescue operation.
Ramos has been employed with Ammons Plumbing for about the last four years, a company worker said.
The North Carolina Department of Labor is investigating the incident. Their report could take up to six weeks to complete.
According to a query done on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Web site, Ammons Plumbing does not have any open or closed safety investigations.
