Worker Gets Prison for Faking Injuries
From Workers Compensation Lawyers
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A former Asheville postal employee who faked injuries to get disability benefits has been sentenced to prison.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that 46-year-old Robin Knight Smith has been sentenced to 7 months in prison.
A video during Smith's trial showed her on a stool gambling for hours at Harrah's Cherokee Casino after she had said she could not work because sitting was painful.
Court records show Smith used a walker before and during doctor's appointments but usually walked without assistance while shopping.
Smith worked at the mail processing center in Asheville.
U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger also ordered Smith to serve three years of supervised probation after her release from prison. She's also been ordered to pay $46,000 in restitution and perform 100 hours of community services.
