TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) -- Police in Columbus County are searching for a killer. A robbery turned shooting in Tabor City has a community shaken after a store clerk died.
An armed robbery on Sunday night ended with the clerk of a convenience store being shot and killed. Customers have been pulling up all day unaware and shocked by what happened.
The open sign at the R&R Quick Mart in Tabor City may be on, but the store is closed. The reason, the shooting death of a worker inside Sunday night.
"I just don't know how this could have happened," Kimberly McClure. "It's a very bad situation."
McClure is one the many customers who pulled up to the Quick Mart Monday, unaware that clerk Abdo Ali Qria was shot and killed during a robbery.
"It took me as a shock whenever I heard it, because he's such a nice person," customer Marie Sellers said. "I don't know why anyone would try and hurt him."
A report from Tabor City Police says just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday police responded to shots fired at the Quick Mart. When officers arrived they found Qria laying face down behind the counter covered in blood. Next to the dead body police found two pistols and money from the register.
Frequent customers like Sellers say Qria had been working at the store for less than three months. He had even become a part owner.
"I don't know how to take this because he was such a nice person," Sellers said.
The shooting has some residents in Tabor City rattled.
"You never think this stuff can happen, but once people start doing this type of stuff they might try and go to people's houses doing this," McClure said. "You never know what kind of protection you got to have. It's a bad situation."
The SBI is helping in the investigation. No word if anyone has been arrested for the murder and robbery.
