An Adams County police officer severely injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer will continue his recovery at a neurorehabilitation center in North Carolina.
Eastern Adams Regional police officer Rick Phillips boarded a plane at the York Airport on Thursday as officers from more than a dozen police departments gathered to see him off and wish him well. With patrol cars lining the tarmac, the officers stood at attention and saluted the man who has come such a long way in a few short months.
"When I went to see him the other night, he was doing a lot better," co-worker Pfc. Richard Keefer said. "He joked around, he was laughing. Sometimes he got emotional when he talked about the kids and stuff like that."
Phillips was critically injured March 11 when he crashed his cruiser into the side of a truck trailer loaded with concrete blocks at the intersection of Route 94 and Route 30 in the village of Cross Keys.
"There were a lot of times we weren't sure he was going to come this far," Eastern Adams police Chief Robert Then said. "I feared the worst at the scene and didn't know what to expect once I got to the hospital, and I'm very happy to see him up and about."
Before he boarded the plane, Phillips shook hands with other officers and asked how they were doing. His friends say that's just like Phillips, and a sign he's "more like his old self."
"He was saying 'thank you,' wanting to know if everybody was okay, that's just Rick's personality, always worried about everybody else," Then said.
The day was filled with emotion; happy and sad.
"It's exciting that hopefully this is the beginning of the end as far as his rehab and he'll be back to normal," Biglerville police officer Craig Hartley said. "It's sad to see him leave, that we're not going to be close enough to go visit him on a regular basis. It's sad that his family's going to be away from him, and his friends."
"It's kind of bittersweet. We hate to see him go, but we know this is the best for him, to get where he needs to be to come back to his family," CSX police officer Denis Yost said.
Although he'll now be many hours away, some say they plan to make a trip to North Carolina and hope Phillips will be back home to his family before too long.
Phillips' wife said she is thankful for the prayers and support over the last few months. She said she's a bit nervous about the move to North Carolina, but added that she's sure it's the right step for her husband.
