APEX, N.C. -- The site of the Western Wake Freeway (N.C. 540) extension project became the scene of a tense, hour-long rescue Saturday, after a worker was injured in a 20-foot trench.

Heavy rescue crews, search-and-rescue task forces, firefighters, and EMS crews were called to the site around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, after a rock apparently rolled into the trench while the worker was inside.

Only Eyewitness News was there as crews were shuttled from a command post on Old Holly Springs Apex Road, to the accident site about a quarter-mile down a dirt road.

Crews were forced to perform a technically-challenging vertical lift to get the injured worker out of the trench.

Officials with Raleigh-Durham Road Builders, the project's contractor, say he suffered a broken arm, and a bruised leg, but is expected to be okay.

He was airlifted to WakeMed in stable condition, and will be kept overnight as a precaution.
