Statesville, NC -- A truck driver from Burke County died in an early morning wreck on Interstate 40 in Iredell County just east of Statesville.

Ronnie Clayton Greer, 65, of Valdese, died in the accident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in a construction zone near the 155 mile-marker.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol said Greer was driving a tractor-trailer from Greensboro to Hickory when he lost control of the truck and it slammed into a crash barrier truck that was part of the construction crew on I-40.

The crash truck was blocking the right lane of I-40 to protect the road crews.

Greer’s truck hit the rear of the barrier truck, and Greer’s truck then caught fire, officials said.

The driver of the barrier truck, Eric Marshall Harris Boling, was transported to a local hospital. Information on his condition was not available Wednesday morning.

The highway patrol is investigating the crash.
