WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- An employee of J. Ramey Construction LLC died Wednesday while working on repairs at Salem Lake in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The incident happened after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to Jim Armentrout of Jade Ramey Construction LLC, two workers were in a manhole trying to replace valves to the raw-water pipeline between Salem Lake and the Thomas Water Treatment Plant.
The men were in the manhole for 15 minutes when they tried to remove an old valve and were overcome by gas fumes.
A third employee tried to help the men, but he was also overwhelmed by the gas fumes.
All three employees were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where one of the men, Herman Wilson, later died.
Wilson was 62 years old and had worked for J. Ramey Construction LLC for 7 years.
According to city officials, the City-County Utilities Division hired J. Ramey Construction LLC in November to clean out the pipe and make necessary repairs in preparations for placing the rebuilt Thomas Water Treatment Plant into operation later this year.
OSHA told WXII reporter Craig Thomas they are currently investigating.
"We documented only low oxygen levels, and we went to another manhole and that had normal levels. So this one had low levels," said Health Compliance Officer Sam Atassi. "We are going to investigate it further and see what's going on."
